Insurance Commissioner Jim Long is finally retiring, and the Journal endorses Republican John Odom to replace him. Odom is not an insurance expert, but he is an experienced political leader, a conservative Republican who was a tremendous asset to the Raleigh City Council for years. He promises to be a consumer advocate in the job. Long's hand-picked successor, Democrat Wayne Goodwin, has experience in the department, but Goodwin has always struck us as a too-eager politician.

Insurance Goals

• Decrease auto insurance for younger adults enrolled in school and improve discounts for working families.
• Lower home owners insurance for all the people and strengthen insurance coverages for the people who live in the southeast of the state. Residents should be able to have both their primary residence and vacation homes covered under the same policy.
• Lower insurance rates for anyone that takes a driver refresher or safety class every four years and maintains a safe driving record.
• Create more affordable business insurance for locally based and operated companies. Repeal workmans comp premiums to help insure their affordability factor, which will in turn promote commerce, and keep companies operating and employing the citizens. The insurance industry needs to invest their profits to improve the economy.
• Lower insurance for the family farmer. Encourage agricultural development to promote more jobs for rural areas.
• We need to lower the cost of insurance for all teachers in the state. It will include home, auto, family health care, and life insurance. They are responsible for our children and we need to repay them for insuring our children's future.

• Insurance companies must encourage all doctors to accept insurance by paying them a customary and usual fee for their services.
• Insurance companies need to stop promoting participation in their companies based on below standard fees. This will only result in lowering quality of health care in this state. People should be able to choose a physician and be properly compensated without increased costs.
• Health insurance companies need to allow college students to be covered under their parents policy for up to 24 months after graduation or until they obtain a full time job. Well being promotes good health, thus lowering health costs. These students are our future and they are in our hands now, we will be in their hands later.
• Free drug care for the elderly of North Carolina is ideal. These people should not have to live their golden years worried about paying for the medications they need to survive. Drug and insurance companies should work together to absorb the cost.

• My goal is to decrease auto and home insurance by 40%.
• For current and retired state employees I plan for free family health care premiums.

 At the age of 46, I have accomplished many of my long-term goals. My family is most important to me and extremely supportive. I am happily married to my wife, Denise and we share 3 wonderful children. Our oldest daughter, Elizabeth, is a Senior at N.C. State University where is she is finishing her undergraduate degree in Economics. Steven is an 8th grader at Centennial Campus Middle and Brian is a fifth grader at Fuquay-Varina Elementary.

Prof. Munger received his Ph.D. in Economics at Washington University in St. Louis in 1984. Following his graduate training, he worked as a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission in the first Reagan Administration. His first teaching job was in the Economics Department at Dartmouth College, followed by appointments in the Political Science Department at the University of Texas (Austin, 1986-1990) and the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, 1990-7). At UNC, he served as Director of the Master of Public Administration Program, training city and county managers. He moved to Duke in 1997, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2000. He also became chair of the Political Science Department in 2000, and still serves in that post. Mike also has joint appointments in the Economics and Public Policy departments at Duke.

Prof. Munger's academic research has focused on Presidential - Congressional conflict, campaign finance, and regulation of markets. In addition to more than 80 articles and papers published in professional journals and edited volumes, Prof. Munger has coauthored or coedited (with Melvin Hinich) three books, Ideology and the Theory of Political Choice (University of Michigan Press, 1994), Analytical Politics (Cambridge University Press, 1997), and Empirical Studies in Comparative Politics (Kluwer Academic Press, 1998). His fourth and most recent book, Analyzing Policy: Choices, Conflicts, and Practices, was published in August 2000 by W.W. Norton. Current research interests include the evolution of the ideology of racism in the antebellum South, ballot access reform, and a study of how human subjects playing a computer simulation choose platforms in virtual "elections."

Senior Policy Analyst

After interviewing fifty families, she found out that in fact they were the norm. Family members all reported feeling completely lost, overwhelmed and stymied by the hospital system. They couldnât reach doctors when they needed them, nurses didn't respond to the call button, medication mistakes put their loved ones in peril, and infectious diseases delayed patients' recoveries, if in fact the patients made it out alive. Many were convinced that medical errors had killed their family members.

Alarmed by what she heard, Martine became extremely motivated to undertake further investigation of hospital patient care. She interviewed over eighty-five registered nurses who worked in hospitals, dozens of physicians, physician assistants, hospital social workers, psychologists, and other medical staff to find out what was going on in hospitals and why so many family members were distraught over their loved onesâ hospitalizations.

From all of the interviews and hundreds of hours of research, Martine realized that hospital care was in crisis. She set out to do something about it. She understood there was no way for her to fix hospital care, but knew that if she could educate family members and get them involved, patients would have safer hospital stays. Hence, the writing of her book, Critical Conditions: The Essential Hospital Guide To Get Your Loved One Out Alive.

Martine is a writer and public relations and marketing executive, with clients that include authors, psychologists, and entrepreneurs. Stein's outdoor experience includes considerable backpacking and camping (starting at age 5), alpine ascents in the Canadian Rockies and High Sierras, solo winter ascents of peaks in the High Sierras and numerous Yosemite Valley hard rock climbs (including several Half Dome and El Capitan big walls).  He volunteers his services as a guide and guide trainer for blind skiers with the Ski for Light blind cross-country skier program.

Prior to acceptance in the Visiting Assistant Professorship Program, Ms. Teachout served as the National Director of the Sunlight Foundation, Washington, DC, where she created a policy platform for transparency in Congress, drafted and lobbied for transparency legislation, and developed new tools for making Congressional information more accessible to citizens. Her efforts were featured on NPR and CNN, and in The Washington Examiner, The Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, PC World, and The New York Times. She is an internationally recognized expert on the impact of the Internet on electoral politics and government.

Ms. Teachout spent three years in Burlington, Vermont. The Culture and Media Institute is an American non-profit organization focusing on promoting what it believes to be traditional values in American culture and beliefs and fair treatment of conservatives in the news media. It was founded in October 2006 as a division of the Media Research Center, a group that monitors perceived liberal news media bias.

CMI promotes its mission through editorials and research reports. "Eye on Culture" is a regular feature in which CMI writers express their opinions on the state of American popular culture. Among its viewpoints include opposition to the Fairness Doctrine and opposition to same-sex marriage. In March 2007, the CMI published a "National Cultural Values Survey" and concluded from its results that most Americans perceived a decline in moral values. I am a moderate (as I believe are most Americans). Hillary and McCain are both moderates. They belong to different Parties, but I am not aligned with a Party. So, I research all candidates' policies, their character and what each done in the past (which is the best predictor of future behavior). I donât agree with any of the candiates 100% on their policies. So, I look at the ones that are most important to me, where they stand and whether or not they are likely to get things done."

Bill Bishop lives in Austin, Texas. He wrote The Big Sort with retired University of Texas sociologist Robert G. Cushing. In the mid 1970s, Kathleen was an officer in the Office of Special Investigations in the U.S. Air Force, where she acquired an early knack for investigations of Soviet and East Bloc espionage. When she left the Air Force, she was heavily recruited by both the FBI and the CIA.

By the mid 1980s she had learned Russian and was working against Soviet Intelligence in the San Francisco Division of the FBI.

Between 1988 and 1994 she was a principal in âProject Slammer,â an interagency espionage study that involved extensive interviews of individuals convicted of espionage.

In 1993 she became a founding member of the FBI National Security Divisionâs Behavioral Analysis Program (BAP), and was an operational and behavioral consultant to numerous high profile counterintelligence and counterterrorism investigations throughout the United States.

Between 1994 and 1998 she was the primary behavioral expert during the UNABOM investigation. She also assisted FBI Inspector Terry Turchie in the investigation of Eric Rudolph in North Carolina in 1998, and received the Attorney Generalâs Award for Distinguished Service the same year.

In 2000 she completed a research internship that led to the production of a dissertation concerning the prediction of violence and the conferring of a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

In 2001 Dr. Puckett conducted a multi-jurisdictional risk assessment study concerning lone domestic terrorists including Theodore Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph for the Counterterrorism Division of the FBI.

Dr. Puckett provides behavioral threat assessment consultation to international corporations and governmental security agencies, and is a law enforcement consultant to the Program of Psychiatry and the Law at the University of California at San Francisco. She is a frequent presenter at law enforcement and mental health community forums on both the UNABOM case and the psychology of terrorism.

Terry Turchie and Dr. Kathleen Puckett give the reader a first-hand look inside the workings of the FBI, its workings with other agencies, and how the political forces around them have compromised the integrity of the agencies, particularly that of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. William "B.J." Lawson is the Republican Party nominee for United States House of Representatives in North Carolina's 4th congressional district (seat currently held by David Price). He defeated Augustus Cho in the primary election on May 6, 2008, 70.5% to 29.4%.

Lawson attended Lakeland Senior High School in Lakeland, Florida, where he was president of the student council.[2] He moved to North Carolina in 1992,[2] where he graduated from Duke University with a degree in biomedical and electrical engineering and from Duke Medical School as a neurosurgeon.

A year into his medical residency at Duke in neurosurgery, Lawson left to start a software company, MercuryMD, which focused on providing easier ways for physicians to access patient records through PDAs. Lawson served as the chief software architect for MercuryMD, which grew to serve 200 hospitals and have 70 employees. He later sold the company.

During the campaign for the GOP 4th District nomination, Lawson has spoken about the higher cost of food and the overspending of the federal government. However, Price has stated that it is "premature" to render final judgment on the suitability of the Butner site before the environmental impacts are assessed, and he inserted a provision in the Department of Homeland Security's Fiscal Year 2009 budget requiring a risk analysis of studying foot and mouth disease on the U.S. mainland before work can be done on design or construction of the disease research lab.

Philip Shenon is an investigative reporter with The New York Times, where he has worked since 1981. He was the lead reporter on the investigation of the September 11 commission and has held several of the most important assignments of the Washington Bureau, including chief Defense Department correspondent, diplomatic correspondent, Congressional correspondent and Justice Department Correspondent. He has reported for The Times from scores of countries across six continents. This is his first book.

Prof. Fagan is an archaeological generalist, with expertise in the broad issues of human prehistory. He is the author or editor of 46 books, including seven widely used undergraduate college texts. Prof. Fagan has contributed over 100 specialist papers to many national and international journals. He is a Contributing Editor to American Archaeology and Discover Archaeology magazines, and formerly wrote a regular column for Archaeology Magazine. He serves on the Editorial Boards of six academic and general periodicals and has many popular magazine credits, including Scientific American and Gentleman's Quarterly.

Prof. Fagan has been an archaeological consultant for many organizations, including National Geographic Society, Time/Life, EncyclopÃdia Britannica, and Microsoft Encarta. Prof. Fagan was awarded the 1996 Society of Professional Archaeologists' Distinguished Service Award for his "untiring efforts to bring archaeology in front of the public." He also received a Presidential Citation Award from the Society for American Archaeology in 1996 for his work in textbook, general writing and media activities. He received the Society's first Public Education Award in 1997.

Fagan is critical of non-traditional archaeology, and has written scathing reviews of rivals outside academia. His own stance, that archaeology should remain a compendium of material facts, is influential within the field. This view permits Fagan's well-known textbooks to skirt issues that are controversial or political, including issues regarding gender, migration, and pre-Columbian oceanic voyages. His expository style is a departure from the kind of serious theoretical questioning of an earlier generation of archaeologist, particularly the pre-World War II generation of archaeologists, whose work he encompasses, but whose theoretical leanings he ignores. Critics of Fagan, therefore, point to his similarity with later members of the Boasian school of anthropology, who were more interested in tracking objects on a grid than in explaining similarities among objects found in various places, or denoting how notions of similarity were to be constructed.

Simon LeVay is a neuroscientist and author known for his studies about brain structures and sexual orientation. He is the co-author of a textbook on human sexuality and has also coauthored books on diverse topics such as earthquakes, volcanoes, parkinson's disease, and extraterrestrial life. LeVay has written a novel, Albrick's Gold, whose main character, Roger Cavendish, is partially based on LeVay himself.

LeVay held positions at Harvard from 1974 to 1984, after which he worked at the Salk Institute from 1984-1993. While at the Salk institute he was also Adjunct Associate Professor of Biology at University of California, San Diego.

Much of his early work looked at visual cortex in animals, especially cats. LeVay's textbook on human sexuality (now in its second edition) was described in one review as "an exceptional book that addresses nearly every aspect of sexuality from multiple theoretical, historical, and cultural perspectives."

Prof. Munger received his Ph.D. in Economics at Washington University in St. Louis in 1984. Following his graduate training, he worked as a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission in the first Reagan Administration. His first teaching job was in the Economics Department at Dartmouth College, followed by appointments in the Political Science Department at the University of Texas (Austin, 1986-1990) and the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, 1990-7). At UNC, he served as Director of the Master of Public Administration Program, training city and county managers. He moved to Duke in 1997, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2000. He also became chair of the Political Science Department in 2000, and still serves in that post. Mike also has joint appointments in the Economics and Public Policy departments at Duke.

Prof. Munger's academic research has focused on Presidential - Congressional conflict, campaign finance, and regulation of markets. Colonel Dennis Nielsen is a retired military officer with 35 years of dedicated service in the United States Air Force. During his committed time of military service he flew a variety of military aircraft including the T-38, F-100, A7, F16 and C26. He was well known throughout the military for his outstanding leadership capabilities and was selected as the Director of Safety for the Air National Guard.

While serving as the Director of Safety at ANG Headquarters in Washington DC he had the responsibility of the flight weapons and ground safety for more than 120,000 military personnel in over 200 locations. His last military assignment before retirement was flying a C-26 surveillance aircraft for the counter drug agency.

During Colonel Nielsenâs service in the military he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross after diverting his A-7 fighter jet during a test flight away from a populated area after engine failure, potentially saving hundreds of lives while risking his own. This award is given only to those who distinguish themselves by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight and is given only to exceptional and outstanding individuals.

He was also honored in a memorial statue after his image was captured by a photographer during his rescue of a small child after the crash of flight 232 in Sioux City, Iowa. Additionally, the story of his bravery and leadership was later depicted in a docudrama Crash Landing: The Rescue of Flight 232, 1992.

Colonel Nielsen graduated form the University of Nebraska with a degree in Law Enforcement. He has accomplished graduate studies with in an assortment of subjects including International Studies. Following law school, Jim returned to Lexington to practice with his father.  His father passed away, and Jim was appointed to serve his unexpired term as a member of The North Carolina House of Representatives. 

He has been a practitioner in law in Lexington for in excess of 37 years and has been admitted to practice before various Federal Courts in North Carolina and The Supreme Court of the United States.  He was named as one of the five outstanding young leaders in North Carolina by the North Carolina Jaycees and has been a local business leader with Chairmanship of the Board of Managers of Security Bank and Trust/Omni/Central Carolina Bank in Lexington.

Why the run for Governor!!!

I feel current politicians are out of touch with the working class in NC and the United States. They continue to penalize working people for succeeding in life by way of more taxes, while they load our wagons, tell us to pull, many people jump on for the ride. If you, put me at the Governors desk for four years I will hands down out perform any other candidate regarding tax relief. I feel politicians come by each four years trying to tell us they are one of us. I also think the working people should have a safety net and am checking into this (your ideas welcomed). If an elected official does not stand behind their campaign platform, we taxpayers should have a way of replacing them at the half way mark of their term. I ask you, please help get the word out, just compare my plans, to ALL the other candidates.

On January 27, 2006, a Los Angeles jury rejected Peterson's claim that Jesse Jackson had threatened him at a business meeting four years ago. The jury also found Jonathan Jackson did not hit Peterson, but split evenly (six to six) on whether he threatened an assault.

On September 21, 2005 Peterson penned a column for WorldNetDaily, in which he suggested that some of the African-American people stranded in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina were "welfare-pampered," "lazy" and "immoral." Peterson also criticized New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin for blaming President George W. Bush for his lack of response to the crisis, stating that "responsibility to perform legally and practically fell first on the Mayor of New Orleans."

On February 28, 2006, as a member of a student panel discussion at the University of California, Irvine on the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy, Peterson stated that extremist Muslims hate America.  The event was sponsored by the United American Committee and College Republicans, and gained national attention for the controversy and confrontation associated with it.

Ron Maxwell is an independent film director and writer from Clifton, New Jersey. Mr. Maxwell graduated from New York University (NYU) Institute of Film in the late 1960s and is a member of the Writers Guild of America, East, Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  He is presently in post-production on a full-length feature film documentary about immigration reform.

As contributing editor at the Writer Guild Of Americaâs "Written By" magazine, Steveâs reputation has given him serious entrance to the best writers and producers in the industry while also allowing him one more outlet to lampoon the entertainment business he cares so much about.

No matter what the venue, Steve always seems to be creating something unique and important.  In TV he has written for Boy Meets World, Cybill, The Smart Guy and (the new) Family Affair, as well as being acknowledged with the Prism Award and a Humanitas nomination. 

As a film director/writer Steve turned the power brokers of Hollywood on their funny bones with his biting/satirical film, My Dinner With Ovitz (www.mydinnerwithovitz.com).

As an author of the inspiring "Great Failures Of The Extremely Successful" (Tallfellow Press, Sept 2002) he was able to get the greats of many different fields to share their remarkable stories of adversity. Steve has more than shown his grasp of creating stories and characters that both entertain and enlighten (without it being jammed down our childrenâs throats).  Executive editor, Rosemary Brosnan of his whacked-out novel, "130 Tales of Winchell Mink" (Harper Collins 2004), "...it's one of the funniest and freshest manuscripts I've ever read."  "15 Minutes" (Harper Collins, 2005), another fun adventure novel, will follow.

Mayor Foster's organization was founded in 1998, when communities throughout the Texas Border Region came together to form the Texas Border Infrastructure Coalition (TBIC) to develop key recommendations for the 76th Texas Legislature. Cities, counties, workforce development organizations, community colleges, universities, and hundreds of individuals participated in subcommittees charges with the responsibilities of developing strategies to address the infrastructure needs of the region.

Today, the organization is known as the Texas Border Coalition (TBC) and it continues to be a collective voice of border mayors, county judges, and communities on issues that affect Texas-Mexico board region quality of life. TBC's vision is to be recognized leader and authority for the Texas-Mexico region in order to bring attention to the infrastructure needs of the communities along the border.

In 1994 he was a founding producer for Wattenberg's Think Tank with Wattenberg,. That same year he moved to New River Media, an independent television production company, which produced "Think Tank" as well as numerous other television programs and projects. Goldberg worked on a large number of television projects across the United States, as well as in Europe and Japan.

Goldberg joined National Review as a contributing editor in 1998. By the end of that year he was asked to launch National Review Online as a sister publication to National Review. He served as editor of National Review Online for several years, and is now editor-at-large.

Goldberg has a National Review Online column, the "Goldberg File", and a second, syndicated column, available from Townhall.com, which tends to be more uniformly serious in tone than his National Review Online column, which he has written regularly since September 11, 1998. He has also written for The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, Commentary, The Public Interest, The Wilson Quarterly, The Weekly Standard, the New York Post, The Womenâs Quarterly, and Slate. The Los Angeles Times added Goldberg to its editorial lineup in 2005.

His book Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning (ISBN 0-385-51184-1) was published in January 2008. While in preparation, it had a number of different subtitles, including "The Totalitarian Temptation From Hegel to Whole Foods" and "The Totalitarian Temptation From Mussolini to Hillary Clinton".

Jim holds a B.A. in newspaper journalism, a B.S. in business administration, and an M.B.A. in taxation. He is a former newspaper reporter and a retired California CPA (Certified Public Accountant).

Jim is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and recipient of the Purple Heart award for wounds sustained while serving with an infantry unit in Vietnam, 1968 - 1969.

In 1971, he waged a successful one-man filibuster for five months that forced the Nixon administration to cut a deal, effectively ending the draft in the United States. He is most prominently known for his release of the Pentagon Papers, the secret official study that revealed the lies and manipulations of successive U.S. administrations that misled the country into the Vietnam War. After the New York Times published portions of the leaked study, the Nixon administration moved to block any further publication of information and to punish any newspaper publisher who revealed the contents.

From the floor of the senate, Gravel (a junior senator at the time) insisted that his constituents had a right to know the truth behind the war and proceeded to read 4,100 pages of the 7,000 page document into the senate record. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled that Senator Gravel did not have the right and responsibility to share official documents with his constituents. 

He then published The Senator Gravel Edition, The Pentagon Papers, Beacon Press (1971). This publication resulted in litigation, Gravel v. U.S., resulting in a landmark Supreme Court decision (No. 71-1017-1026) relative to the Speech and Debate Clause (Article 1, Section 6) of the United States Constitution.

He has worked as a cab driver in New York City, a clerk on Wall Street and as a brakeman on the Alaska Railroad. He founded and served as president of The Democracy Foundation, Philadelphia II, and Direct Democracy, nonprofit corporations dedicated to the establishment of direct democracy in the United States through the enactment of the National Initiative for Democracy by American voters.

As a nationally acclaimed forensic expert, Dr. Wecht has frequently appeared on several nationally syndicated programs discussing various medicolegal and forensic scientific issues, including medical malpractice, drug abuse, the assassinations of both President John F. Dr. Williams came to international prominence in early June, 2006, as a result of his central involvement as an investigator the month prior into the suspicious activities of members of the faculty of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. These investigations, paired with investigations being conducted by Ontario police eventually led to the arrests of 17 terrorist suspects by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

As a journalist, Dr. Williams served as the editor/publisher of The Metro, the largest weekly newspaper in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Metro, under his leadership/ownership, was named one of the best newspapers in the state for editorial content by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers' Association, and, in 1993, he became the only journalist to capture three first-place Keystone Press Awards in three distinct categories in the same year. In addition, he has penned feature articles for National Review (one of which sparked the longest running print debate in the history of a major periodical) and has served as a regular correspondent on world affairs for World Net Daily.
 
For five years, Dr. Williams served as a senior consultant on organized crime and international terrorism for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His field work resulted in the arrests and convictions of leading crime figures.
 
Dr. Williams earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wilkes University, a Master of Divinity degree from Drew University, and a a Ph.D. in philosophical theology from Drew University (1976). He has been the recipient of six major academic scholarships and a teaching fellowship from Lehigh University.
